So yesterday morning we arrived in New Orleans (or Nola as people call it, apparently). We came in through the Ninth Ward which was, obviously, pretty depressing. Most of the houses and buildings are still destroyed and people clearly haven't come back to them since Katrina. You can still see the X's on most of those houses, but there are a few where you can tell people tried to wash them off or paint over them. There are also a few houses strung throughout that are brand new. There really aren't many, but the new houses are actually pretty cute - if you don't look at their surroundings. There really is no other way to describe it besides devastated, because many of the streets and lots are completely overgrown and abandoned.
Then we headed over to the Garden District.. talk about polar opposites. These houses were GORGEOUS. Like, almost convinced me that I could live in New Orleans gorgeous. Of course I would have to be incredibly rich before I was willing to do that because that is the only way you can afford these homes. They were those perfect southern mansions, with sun rooms and walk-out windows. The streets are all lined with huge trees and the properties usually have palm trees mixed in as well. Even the sidewalks were beautiful, and sometimes custom made. We were hungry by the time we got to the Garden District, so walking a couple blocks in the heat made us starving and we headed over to the French Quarter.
The French Quarter is so awesome. People my age will hate me for saying this.. but it would be so much better if they had open container laws. I thought the same thing in Key West, and it's not because I'm against the partying it creates. Despite not being into partying myself, I think that is actually a cool part of both cities. What I don't find to be as cool are the drunk/high homeless people wandering the streets at all hours of the day. For example, we had one homeless guy virtually following us through the streets yesterday after sitting near us in a restaurant. No, he didn't eat there, and yes, he got kicked out within five minutes. He had a little dog with him, Geronimo, which actually was pretty cute and he kept playing with Kaos. This was really the only somewhat cool homeless guy we saw, and he was only acceptable because of his dog. The dog followed him everywhere and I'm pretty sure understood every word the guy said to him. Half way through the day he had to go buy another beer and the dog followed him into the store, which was also pretty cool. Oh well, it made the day slightly more interesting.
The architecture and food of New Orleans are both great. I didn't expect all of the streets to be so cute and interesting. There are little details in everything and most of the streets have these ceramic tiles in them telling you what the street was named when Louisiana was still under French possession. I also really liked the open air markets, especially the food part. Plus most restaurants had really nice outdoor seating, which made for a nice environment. Many had live music being played outside and we could also eat with the dog which was super helpful. The servers would bring us cups of water for him to drink because it was brutally hot.
Speaking of brutally hot, we definitely camped that night. When we got to the campsite we thought we might die in our sleep from the heat. Fortunately most of our campsite was in shade by the time we went to the grocery store to get dinner so the rest of the night went pretty well. There were also a ton of dragonflies all over the campsite. Remember when there was that Generation X of cicadas and it seemed like they were taking over the world? That's how these dragon flies were, there were clouds of them. Kaos kept trying to eat them. We (Zach, Kaos and I - my parents slept in a hotel) slept without the rain fly on the tent to let in the breeze and woke up fairly damp from the dew. I knew that would happen, but it destroyed my hair. After telling Zach how terrible my hair was, he looked at me and said "I feel how your hair looks: gross." Nice.
For breakfast we went to the famous Cafe du Monde for beignets which were probably the highlight of the trip for me. Easier to eat but still incredibly messy funnel cakes.. for breakfast?? I mean, come on.. It doesn't get any better. Plus our server made us laugh several times, only we were laughing at her and not with her. She was angry at us for taking up 2 tables (they were made for maybe 3 people each and we had 5, plus we were there for maybe 30 minutes) and then when she realized we wanted more water she took my mom's water glass out of her hand, dumped the rest of her water into my glass, and walked off to fill up the glasses for us. She was just trying to be fast and helpful, and told us how cute our dog was, so she won us over in the end.. but still. Wow.. Still, the beignets were too die for. I couldn't believe how delicious they were and the extreme mess we made was also entertaining. There was powdered sugar everywhere, including my ear as Zach constantly pointed out. It was awesome.
After that we left for Austin, which is where I am right now. We had planned on getting lunch in Baton Rouge and then dinner in Houston, but we were all stuffed from breakfast by the time we got to Baton Rouge so we waited until we got to Lafayette. That ended up being a great decision because our lunch there was just all around great; we ate at the Blue Dog Cafe. We found it on Yelp, always the best, and they opened up the patio so we could eat there with the dog. We had the patio to ourselves which we always prefer so we can be our obnoxious selves. Our waitress was super nice - she explained why she didn't have the terrible accent (it's really just in Northern Louisiana and outside of New Orleans), helped us with the menu (we needed a LOT of help - we're such obvious tourists), and brought out the other waitresses to pet Kaos because they all fell in love with him too .. seems to be a theme, huh?? ;) The food was also really good. The boys all got some sort of fried platter, and all of them were huge despite only being like $10. My mom got a salad that she liked so much that she bought a quart of their homemade dressing. I ate rolls because their honey garlic butter was so good there was no reason for me to get an entree. I broke down and ordered the battered fries too.. it was an awesome meal.
When we crossed into Texas it was immediately obvious why they say everything is bigger in Texas. First off, the exit signs start in the high 800's. Then we stopped at a gas station and saw the biggest grasshopper and wasp we've ever seen. These things could have eaten me alive. I also saw "country roads" for the first time ever. I didn't even know people could use that as their address until about a year ago, so actually seeing them in real life was like a natural phenomenon. It's also pretty impressive to see how many bayous and parishes there are (Louisiana and Texas both). Those are definitely two things you never see in Northern Virginia, or anywhere I've been, and they are extremely common down here. Bayous and swamps are awesome in my book, so that's just been another nice part of this trip.
The driving has been pretty easy so far for some reason. Because of the truck we've been going pretty slow, which actually makes it so you don't have to be scared when you see a cop on the side of the road. Who would have thought?? It's probably the first time in my life I haven't had to check my speed immediately and wonder if he was going to come get me, and its a pretty nice feeling. Also nice? The sunset tonight. It reminded me of leaving home Monday night, because we drove off into the sunset then too, and I realized that that already feels like forever ago.
And now we're just sitting in the hotel room waiting for Zach and my dad to get back with the Mexican food their grabbing. I actually got pretty sick today (fever and all) while driving up here, so I'm going big with an order of tortillas. I'm definitely looking forward to just hanging out in the room and getting a good nights sleep.

M-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i
Just woke up from Night 2 of the trip. We are currently at some random town in Mississippi (all I can remember that it was Exit 4) and we are about an hour outside of New Orleans. We planned on stopping at Meridian, but having a dog makes it much harder to find a hotel room.
Driving down here has made me realize a few things. First off, there have been some crazy rain storms (like people pull over or put their emergency flashers on so you can see them) with really dark clouds, which makes me realize that we should probably start worrying about tornadoes if that happens in, say, Texas. I love extreme weather like that, but that made it a little creepy. I've also realized that "cities" down here are not cities. Any random town in Northern Virginia is bigger than these places, and Reston Town Center by itself beats most of them, and don't get me started on Tysons. The mall in Tysons by itself probably has a higher population. Also, the south would be a lot cooler if people didn't have accents. Even listening to the radio can be difficult because the commercials sound so awful. I will say, though, that some towns (Birmingham, for example) have pretty good music. We were able to find 2 or 3 radio stations we liked when we were lucky. Speaking of which, as I was driving through a one lane construction zone I had a chick with Texas plates tailgating me like crazy.. despite the fact that I was going 10 mph over and that speeding fines were doubled. I then realized that this girl probably already hated me because I was driving a beautiful brand spanking new Prius (in my humble opinion..), but would hate me much, much more if she realized that I was listening to NPR and moving from DC to LA (not the state). I feel liberal just saying that. She was sooo not liberal.
Kaos has been so cute in the car its ridiculous. I'm sure when people think of pitbulls they think of some ferocious killing machine (shout out to Linnhe and Todd) but he was like a stuffed animal yesterday. He literally slept the entire way from Radford to the hotel and would periodically change positions so he could cuddle with a different person. Maybe I should have said rag doll instead of stuffed animal, because they were usually extremely awkward positions. Plus, when we were eating at this (delicious) BBQ place in Nashville he wasn't even excited when people walked by our outdoor table unless it was someone in the family. People were walking past us and he just ignored them completely. What a cutie ;)
The first night of our trip we stayed at Mark and Maddy's house. That was really helpful, plus we got to see their new place. I love old houses so much, and their house has that cute old house charm. All of the details around the doors and in the stair wells. Plus they painted it really cool colors and have great decorations and stuff, so it was just really nice.
Before that we had just been running endless errands and packing up last minute stuff. For some reason that was the hardest packing we had to do. It was all such random stuff that we're lucky we didn't forget in a lot of cases, and then we had to squeeze it in the truck somewhere. Everything fit so I'm still glad we got the 12 foot, but its all jammed in like puzzle pieces. Kristen, Jon and Zach's family came over to see us off, which was really hard. I said the other day that it had finally hit me that I was moving, but looking back I don't think it has hit me at all. It feels more like I'm moving back to Fairfax or something, just with a reallyyyyy long vacation in the mean time. It definitely hasn't hit me that I'll never be back at the house I grew up in again, or how long it will be before I see the people I see constantly at home. Not to mention that I'll probably/hopefully never work at CCF again, yet that place is still on my mind pretty often.
Anyways, today the first real vacation part of this trip - New Orleans. I'm very excited. I've never been there before (if you don't count when I was one year old) and neither have Connor or Zach. I think everyone but me is primarily excited for the food and eating constantly while we're there. I'm excited to see the French Quarter, Garden District and places like the Ninth Ward that were devastated in Katrina. Tonight Zach and I camping so I probably won't get to update the blog, unless my parents' room has wifi, until Austin.

The End is Almost Near
Well the truck is packed and we've had our last day at work. Two major steps down..
We've been packing for days and today we picked up the truck and loaded that. Fortunately my uncle, Todd, is the master packer so that went really well. We were able to downsize from a 16 foot truck to a 12 footer, which will make driving so much easier. It was brutally hot but we had a lot of fun (for lack of a better word) anyways. And we finished before the most crucial storm of the summer hit. Trees fell over and I swear the wind blew my car while I was driving. It was perfect though, because thunderstorms are one of the things I will miss the most. Anyways, we still have random things around the house to pack up and throw in the back of the truck, but that's one major step conquered.
Yesterday was our last day at work. :( It was really hard saying bye to everyone - I have been lucky enough to work with some really amazing people. As Daniel always said we really are a family. I told Isabella I would kill her if there was any cake giving or little goodbye events (I hate being the center of attention, and this is even worse than the birthday singing). I ended up sparing her life, but it made it really rough. But the card they gave Zach and me was hilarious and the cake was delicious, so it was all worth it. It wasn't only hard saying bye to my coworkers but I will really miss some of the members. Some people there were so incredibly miserable to be around, but others really came to feel like family as well. Hopefully I'll get to come back and visit them soon..
Speaking of family, Zach's came over for pizza tonight. It was really nice having everyone gathered around together. His mom and grandma will be back tomorrow fortunately, so the goodbye's weren't too rough today, but it's still sad knowing that we wont be able to do things like that as much anymore. We just keep telling everyone that they will have to come visit in California, so hopefully they all take us up on that.
Other excitement for today?? I got an iPad! I have a pretty good feeling Zach will be using it more often than I do, though. Oh, and someone put an offer in on my parents house. That will relieve a lot of stress right in time for our vacation.
So now I just have to take care of the three extensive lists I have made for tomorrow it'll be all over and done with. Everything I do, like shower, I think about how its probably the last time I'll get to do that in this house. It's all really hitting me, but at the same time I think I'm still in denial.

Reality Hits
Okay, so, I'm moving. I realized that when I woke up this morning. It may not be news to all of you, but it was news to me this morning. Yesterday's events made it finally fall into place for me.
First it was that Caitlin came over to hang out a little while I packed my bathroom up. That reminded me of when I was packing to move out to Fairfax for school. Then we went to Costco with Zach's mom and Andy to buy things like laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, etc. That felt like college where your parents are getting ready to send you off to school and want to make sure your taken care of. And then we went to Jacksons and the rest of Reston Town Center with Kristen, Ricky, Joey, Tony and Kyle. And that... well that felt normal. But it wasn't. It was celebrating us leaving, and that felt very strange. To make it even harder they all came back to my house afterward, just for a little because the fire pit fell through, but sitting around in my parents house felt like high school. And that's when it really started to hit me - that I was leaving people behind that I really love and care about. Of course they will all come visit in California, but it will never be the same again. With all of that on my mind, I woke up this morning realizing that my days in this house are numbered. And as if that wasn't rough enough, we had to start packing immediately so I could be at work by 11 (which I'm running behind for because I'm writing this blog...).
Also, Kaos went in to lose his manhood yesterday. He was so handicapped yesterday, which was actually really nice because he had no energy. This morning hes back to his crazy self. Same old, same old. More to come later, gotta get to work :)

Tank Empty in: 604 Miles
Soooo I bought a Prius yesterday! I'm VERY excited. Well, by bought I should say lease, but as of now I do plan on buying it out at the end of the 3 years, and I wanted to keep my monthly payments as low as possible for the time being. Plus, it made it so I could get the 2010 Prius, which has a wayyyy better interior (and slightly better exterior) than the previous models. So now we will save lots of money on the 4,000 mile trip cross country and I won't have to worry about making a down payment once I've already paid all of the money for the move. Also important- it came with a free iPad. Well, a gift card to the Apple Store for $525 so I can buy the iPad or whatever else I want. So awesome. Now I just have to put my bumper sticker of a girl riding a wave on it and I'll be all set.
Yesterday was a good day even without the fact that I got a new car. Cameron came home from Richmond to hang out a little before Zach and I left. He plans on being back this weekend, which is good since I didn't even get to say bye to him at the restaurant because the car buying took SO long. But it was very nice of him to come up. Also I went to Hooters with a bunch of the people from my work as a "goodbye" dinner. Most of the people I will see again at work, but not Daniel and Luis, so that was really sad. After dinner we went to see Inception which was pretty good, but not as amazing as everyone tried to hype it up to be. The worst part was the movie theater was FREEZING. Like, Isabella, Zach and I had a blanket on ourselves (def would have left if Katie didn't have a blanket in her trunk) and I was still incredibly cold. But Sarah got us in for free so it was all worth it.
Mitchell, one of my uncles, was talking to my mom the other day and said he thinks he could get me a job in a studio or a law office, so that was a real relief. Jobs seem extremely hard to come by, so even if the studios don't pay well it will be something really fun that will provide income until something more stable comes along. I'm really excited just by the idea of it because that would be such a cool experience. Besides that I'll probably keep serving, or maybe even work in a hotel, for extra income. It would be amazing if I could start saving money again after this movie, not just scrape by.
Tomorrow is another going away dinner, this time with the guys and Kristen. She was very nice and planned the whole thing. Should be very fun and emotional at the same time. Looking forward to it.

Here Goes Nothing
Well, I've never had a blog before, but I guess this is a good time to start one. I always say how I take pictures of everything because I have no memory and no other way to remember things, so I guess this is the next step in me trying to remember all the fun little details in my life. Although I'm treating this as a personal online diary, hopefully other people will enjoy it as well.
So here we are, about a week and a half away from the big move. Pretty much the only stuff packed is the stuff that never got unpacked from when I moved back home in December. That and my winter clothing, because when we had 2 weeks straight of 100 degree weather I figured I'd never need jeans or a t-shirt again before I moved. Then it started to rain... So everyone who was hoping for rain, you're welcome. I'm pretty sure that by packing away all the clothing I could have needed in normal temperatures I managed to bring them back. But that's just how my life works.
I have been relentlessly researching everything we could possibly do on this cross country trip. It's really the only way I can distract myself from what I'm really about to do. Some places are booked, some places we might end up sleeping on the side of the street - but that's half the fun of driving cross country, right? More importantly, I had read about all the weird roadside things you could think of. Don't know how many we'll actually stop at, but oh well. Hopefully it will all payoff when we finally hit the road.
So until then I will just keep enjoying my life here.. watching my great TV shows, working my butt off.. you know. No, actually I have a few things planned so I can spend time with my incredible friends before I'm on the other side of the country. I am very excited for this last week and a half, but also extremely nervous about it at the same time. My friends don't usually see me cry, but I think we all know that they will get to these next few days.
